Advanced Certificate
in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy

PLEASE NOTE: The Advanced Certificate is only available in New Zealand about every 3-4 years. Also, the structure of this programme is currently under review.

Introduction

The Advanced Certificate is the second level of formal training in REBT. You will receive an update on current thinking in REBT, increase your knowledge and skills, develop a self-chosen area of practice, and receive supervision of work from your own professional caseload. You will learn about the advanced use of REBT (e.g. working with difficult clients, efficiency, advanced skills) and its use with different client groups and problem areas. Not least, the Advanced will give you the opportunity to learn from one of the world’s leading proponents of REBT, Professor Stephen Palmer (London).

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE

Stage I - Preparation

Stage I involves home study and preparation of (1) two short tapes of your REBT clinical work (if this is not possible, an alternative may be negotiated); and (2) a presentation on a topic of your own choosing, relating to the use of REBT.

Possible topics for your presentation might include: a particular client group (e.g. children, women); a specific condition (e.g. addiction, psychosis, anxiety, disabled); or a modality (e.g. workplace effectiveness, stress management, groupwork, couples). You will receive advice on suitable reference material for your topic and prepare a ten-minute presentation and brief handout to deliver at the practicum.

Stage II - Practica

As well as your home-based work, you will attend five days of seminar and practice work. You can complete the 5 days consecutively, or, if your prefer, do parts at different centres and at different times.

Stage IIa: 1-day Workshop - CBT with Difficult and Resistant Clients

You will join with other participants in this workshop, learning about the various blocks to therapeutic progress and a number of CBT strategies that can be used to overcome these blocks.

Stage IIb: 2-day Primary Certificate in Stress Management

The next two days will consist of (in 2005) the Primary Certificate in Stress Management conducted by Professor Palmer. Note that you will gain two certificates by completing the Advanced programme - the Advanced Cert. REBT plus the Stress Cert.

If you have already gained the Primary Certificate in Stress Management you will only have to do Stages IIa, IIc and III.

Stage IIc: 2-day Advanced Practicum

Seminars by Professor Palmer along with participant presentations (ten minutes each for presentations, followed by discussion, feedback and suggestions from the presenter and group); coupled with group supervision of participants’ tapes with additional seminar work.

Stage III - Follow-up & final Assessment

After the Advanced practicum, you will finish your presentation/essay and prepare a taped interview for your final assessment. This will be a full 45-minute interview, with an analysis of the interview and of the case involved (similar to what you presented to gain your Primary Certificate).

Certification

Attendance at all practicum seminars and relevant supervision sessions is required for certification. Granting of the Advanced Certificate will enable you to apply for membership of the Association for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapists (UK).

Fees

For fees, see the advanced registration form.

Because of the supervision requirements at the Practicum, the course will be limited to a very small number of participants.

Entrance requirements

To be admitted to the Advanced Certificate course, you need to:

  • Hold a Primary Certificate in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy.
  • Be in a practice situation which provides opportunity to utilise REBT in working with individuals, couples, families or groups.
  • Have been regularly practising REBT skills gained on your Primary Certificate Course for at least 6 months.
  • Belong to a recognised professional organisation, e.g. NZPsS, NZASW, NZNA, NZAC, NZAOT, or similar organisations in other countries. (If you are currently applying for such membership, you may complete the course now, and be issued a Certificate when your membership is finalised).
  • Be receiving regular supervision of your work with clients, according to your professional organisation’s requirements.

Training Faculty

Professor Stephen Palmer, PhD. Director, Centre for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (London); Associate Fellow, Albert Ellis Institute for Rational-Emotive Therapy (New York); Certified REBT Supervisor; Chartered Psychologist. Assessment & Certification

The Advanced component is certificated by the New Zealand Centre for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and is recognised by the UK Centre. The Stress Management component is certificated by the UK Centre itself.

Assessment of the Advanced component will consist of:

  1. Supervision of work presented on practicum;
  2. Completion of presentation/essay at home;
  3. Submission of taped interview for supervision.

Participants who fail any part of the assessment will have opportunities to repeat the work involved (submission of repeat work for assessment will attract an additional charge to cover the time involved for the assessor, extensions of time may involve such a charge).

Granting of the Advanced Certificate will qualify you to become a Member of the Association for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapists (UK).

Reading

Required reading:

You will receive a book of readings.

You will require one additional text, to be chosen by yourself from a list supplied, relevant to your presentation topic. (If you already have a potentially suitable text not on that list, you can submit this for consideration).

Suggested reading - try to take a look at one or two of the following:

  • Bernard, Michael (Ed). Using Rational-Emotive Therapy Effectively. Plenum Press, New York, 1991.
  • Bernard, Michael. Staying Rational in an Irrational World. Lyle Stuart, New York, 1986. Highly recommended. Available through interloan and in some bookshops.
